The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) came up with a consultation paper to relook at imposing restrictions on discounts offered by broadcasters on channel bouquets after the new concept of the regulatory framework for cable and broadcasting services. The regulator hit out at the broadcasters on Friday and said that the channel pricing is “misused to throttle market discovery of TV channel prices, by giving huge discounts on the bouquets.”

The tariff declared by the broadcasters under the new regulatory framework shows that bouquets are being offered at a discount of up to 70 percent of the sum of the a-la-carte rates of pay channels constituting those bouquets. It indicates that in the absence of any restriction on the discount on the offering of bouquets, broadcasters are making prices of a-la-carte channels illusory thereby impacting the a-la-carte choice of channels by consumers,” Said The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in a statement.

They gave the freedom to watch and offer as well as select television channels they want to watch. And a specific analysis revealed that the regulatory framework had brought transparency in TV channel pricing, business processes in the sector also reduced the disputes among their stakeholders.

On Friday, the operator also accepted the challenge of having lots of bouquets with the same kind of channel mix that offers both broadcasters and distributors. Well, they also said that this could create confusion among customers, which will force them to pick suggested packs instead of choosing channels and they won’t select channels as per their comfort. The regulator board is also seeking out for various issues in the consultation paper that is about the ceiling price of channels for inclusion in a bouquet.
